Rendering of teeth with 3 filling materials at Roane Family Dental.Roane Family Dental uses the latest technology and best material to create high-quality, safe fillings for patients in our friendly clinic. When a tooth is damaged due to decay, we carefully remove the diseased part of the tooth and replace it with a filling to prevent the spread of decay, eliminate pain, and restore full function of the affected tooth. Here is a brief introduction to fillings and why they may be necessary when you visit our practice.

When is a Filling Necessary?

Exposure to harmful outside influences can cause decay in the teeth. Excessive sugar consumption, tobacco use, poor dental hygiene, and other factors contribute to the growth of pathogenic bacteria on the teeth. The decay of a tooth is known as a cavity. Broken or chipped teeth due to trauma, such as experienced in a sporting activity or a car accident, may also require fillings to repair the damage. Teeth grinding is another common way that the integrity of the teeth might be compromised.

During an examination, we may take x-rays in addition to a visual examination using dental tools to detect the presence of cavities. We recommend visits to our clinic at least every six months to look for cavities and take quick action to stop further damage to the teeth.

What Are Fillings Made of?

The materials used for fillings have evolved in recent years to maximize long-term function and to protect your health. We consult with each of our patients to determine the material used. Metal fillings have historically been a common option, including silver, gold, and amalgam (a combination of zinc, copper, tin, mercury or other metals). However, patients who do not want metal fillings can also choose resin, composite, or glass ionomer. Each of these materials has specific benefits and drawbacks which we can discuss when you visit our clinic.

How Do We Perform Fillings?

If we determine that fillings are required, the first step is to numb the area to minimize pain. This is usually done with topical agents or an injection into the gum. The effects of numbing will wear off in a few hours after you leave the clinic with your new fillings.

High-tech drills and other equipment are then used on the numb area to precisely remove the damaged areas of the teeth while leaving the areas that are still healthy. Once the damaged areas are removed, our dentist will sweep away any debris and clean the tooth to prepare for implementing the filling.

When you return to our clinic after your fillings are complete, we will check to make sure the tooth is healthy and that any pain associated with the impacted tooth has subsided. As part of your routine care, we will also discuss lifestyle factors and proper dental hygiene to keep your teeth healthy and avoid future fillings work.

I adore Dr. Roane and his staff.

"I have been a patient here for 10 years, since he started this practice. He has fixed my chipped front teeth twice, most recently this week. He is truly an artist and such a nice guy! My teeth look natural and healthy again. As always, the procedure was painless, quick, and professional. The office is clean, the front office is efficient, and everyone is friendly.

Dr. Roane even opened the clinic on New Year's Day a few years ago to treat my daughter's dry socket after she had her wisdom teeth pulled. I will always be grateful for that, and will remain a loyal patient here even though I moved to Tigard 2 years ago."
