Whitening

Before and after photo of teeth whitening treatment at Roane Family Dental.Achieving and maintaining a perfect white smile is possible when you have our team at Roane Family Dental at your service. We provide teeth whitening procedures that help get rid of stains and discolorations that can mar your appearance. Tooth color is mostly influenced by the way light reflects off the enamel. It can also be affected by the color of dentin in the interior of the tooth. With continued exposure to certain factors, the enamel will pick up stains that require professional efforts to remove.

Some factors that can cause stains include tobacco use. Cigarettes, cigars and tobacco chewing can cause teeth to gain yellow and brown stains. Drinking dark-colored and high sugar liquids like coffee, tea, soda, and red wine can also contribute adversely. Poor health and aging can also result in tooth enamel becoming worn down and the darker dentin becoming more visible.

The Whitening Process

While there are over the counter toothpaste, gels, and powders that claim to be able to whiten teeth, the results are rarely anything beyond a couple of shades difference. If you are looking for a better result, then visiting our dentist office is your best option. Depending on the results you are looking for and the level of staining and discoloration your teeth have suffered, you may need more than one appointment to get a good outcome.

Our dentist will likely begin by having you undertake a tooth cleaning. This is to remove any buildup of bacteria that is on the tooth and can reduce some of these surface stains. After cleaning, our dentist will then apply a protective substance along the gumline to protect the area. The whitening agent will then be applied to the teeth, and a special laser light shone in the mouth to help activate it.

Thereafter, you may be asked to return for another appointment for more whitening, or provided with trays and whitening gel so you can repeat the process at home. The whitening gels we supply are typically stronger than most over the counter selections. The trays will be custom made to ensure the gel applied remains in full contact with your tooth surfaces.

Preparing for The Whitening Procedure

While you may desire to have your teeth whitened quickly, some situations may call for delay. Dental problems like cavities and receded gums can mean having to wait until they are treated before you can opt for whitening. This is because the whitening solutions can penetrate past these areas to more interior parts of the tooth, causing sensitivity and pain.

It is also worth noting that whitening does not work on veneers and crowns. For root canals, the discoloration often originates from inside the tooth. To bring about a change, the whitening solution would have to be applied to the interior of the tooth that has been emptied of dentin and nerves. A temporary filling is placed until when our dentist instructs you to return to check the progress. It may take several visits for the tooth to achieve the desired color change.

Teeth whitening can provide a big boost to your appearance and self-esteem. To take advantage of these benefits, call us, Roane Family Dental at (503) 974-0464 today and book an appointment.

I adore Dr. Roane and his staff.

"I have been a patient here for 10 years, since he started this practice. He has fixed my chipped front teeth twice, most recently this week. He is truly an artist and such a nice guy! My teeth look natural and healthy again. As always, the procedure was painless, quick, and professional. The office is clean, the front office is efficient, and everyone is friendly.

Dr. Roane even opened the clinic on New Year's Day a few years ago to treat my daughter's dry socket after she had her wisdom teeth pulled. I will always be grateful for that, and will remain a loyal patient here even though I moved to Tigard 2 years ago."
