At our Roane Family Dental clinics, we have often found that gum disease is a very prevalent condition. The main challenge with it is that unless you have been undergoing regular dental exams, it can be difficult to realize you suffer the problem until it is too late. The early symptoms and signs tend to be painless so most people will only come in for treatment when severe problems such as bleeding and tooth loss have already begun. Regular dental exams and cleanings help reduce the risk of gum disease occurring, and if it happens anyway, that early detection occurs.

The Three Stages of Gum Disease

The early stage of gum disease is gingivitis. At this point, there will be inflammation of the gums that presents as swelling and redness. There will be dental plaque build-up along the gumline, and some bleeding may occur when you brush or floss.

The next stage is periodontitis. At this level, the damage will have sunk into the supporting bone and fibers around the tooth. The plaque will have collected in pockets below the gumline. The final stage is advanced periodontitis. Here you will find that much of the bone and supporting fibers have been irreversibly damaged, and teeth have become loose. This makes eating and speaking uncomfortable, and tooth loss can occur.

Periodontal Treatment Options

At its earliest stage of gingivitis, it is possible to receive professional treatment and for the condition to reverse. Deep cleaning performed by our dentist, and adopting a stricter routine of brushing and flossing can help set things right before bacteria eat too deep into the gumline.

Deep cleaning procedures will take the place of routine cleaning. This treatment will involve scaling and root planing. It helps to clear out the pockets of bacteria and remove the plaque and tartar. It also involves smoothening of root surfaces to discourage hiding spots for bacteria. This procedure may require the application of anesthesia for your comfort.

Our team may also prescribe its repetition on a more frequent basis until the disease becomes well managed. We will book an appointment for a few weeks after the procedure to check on progress and determine if other treatment may be necessary.

In more advanced stages, some treatments can be tried to help alleviate symptoms and provide a better chance of salvaging teeth before they fall out. Pocket reduction procedures help to remove deeply embedded pockets of bacteria and give the gums a chance to reattach.

Gum grafting is a procedure meant to restore coverage for exposed root sections. When the gums have receded excessively, gum tissue can be taken from other areas of the mouth, like the palate, and used to cover exposed roots. This procedure helps to solve the problem of sensitivity and protects the root from easy exposure to bacteria that will cause further decay and bone loss.

Bone grafting is done where periodontal disease destroys supporting bone. Our dentist will place synthetic or natural bone to the affected area and add tissue-stimulating proteins to encourage tissue and bone regrowth.

I adore Dr. Roane and his staff.

"I have been a patient here for 10 years, since he started this practice. He has fixed my chipped front teeth twice, most recently this week. He is truly an artist and such a nice guy! My teeth look natural and healthy again. As always, the procedure was painless, quick, and professional. The office is clean, the front office is efficient, and everyone is friendly.

Dr. Roane even opened the clinic on New Year's Day a few years ago to treat my daughter's dry socket after she had her wisdom teeth pulled. I will always be grateful for that, and will remain a loyal patient here even though I moved to Tigard 2 years ago."
