Exams
West Linn, OR

Woman talking to dentist during dental exam at Roane Family Dental in West Linn, OREven with the most strictly adhered to regimen of brushing and flossing, it is still important to see our dentist regularly. At our Roane Family Dental clinic, we like to emphasize the importance of dental exams as a vital step in ensuring good oral health.

During these professional exams, our dentist will likely see something that is not as obvious to you. By making close examinations of even hidden areas of the mouth and using such diagnostic tools as x-rays, our team can ensure that all is well, or identify problems in their early stages. Preventive dentistry offers you the best chance of enjoying a full set of healthy natural teeth well into your advanced age.

What Happens During a Dental Exam?

Most procedures will begin with a review of your health status. Be sure to let us know if there are any changes since your last visit, such as the diagnosis of a new condition or the adoption of a different diet. An oral exam will then be carried out. We will inspect all areas of the mouth, especially the teeth and gums. A small mirror and light will be used to make less visible areas easier to examine. Soft tissue areas like the gums, cheek, and tongue will also be probed using a gloved finger to check for lumps.

The next step is a thorough cleaning. Our dentist or dental hygienist will use a scraper to remove any build-up of plaque and tartar on the tooth. This is important because if left unattended, it could lead to gum disease. This cleaning will then be followed by polishing and fluoride treatment.

Although we do carry out exams and cleanings twice a year for most patients, we typically undertake x-rays once a year. This may, however, change if we require further diagnostic assistance due to worrying symptoms being detected. Dental x-rays are useful in giving a clearer view of structures hidden beneath the gum, including impacted teeth, decay, and damage to the jawbone.

Reasons to Have Dental Exams

Dental exams are important in preventing serious oral and general health problems. Something as simple as a cavity is better dealt with in the early stages so that more of the natural tooth can be saved. Many of the treatments for minor dental conditions can be handled within the same appointment and at a minimal cost. If the problems persist, the cost of repair or restoration will likely be much higher and take longer to accomplish.

The oral cavity can also present symptoms of more general health conditions. Systemic diseases such as diabetes and arthritis can be detected early through an oral exam. Just as with oral diseases, this early detection can help in reducing the level and cost of treatment. Remember that many diseases are never obvious or painful until they are in advanced stages, and by this time, the effect may be irreversible. For children and adults who are not well educated when it comes to oral health, such an exam can be useful in learning about the best care practices that will preserve a healthy mouth.

Helping you achieve and preserve a healthy smile is something we excel at. To take advantage of our dental care services, call us, Roane Family Dental at (503) 657-1215 now.

I adore Dr. Roane and his staff.

"I have been a patient here for 10 years, since he started this practice. He has fixed my chipped front teeth twice, most recently this week. He is truly an artist and such a nice guy! My teeth look natural and healthy again. As always, the procedure was painless, quick, and professional. The office is clean, the front office is efficient, and everyone is friendly.

Dr. Roane even opened the clinic on New Year's Day a few years ago to treat my daughter's dry socket after she had her wisdom teeth pulled. I will always be grateful for that, and will remain a loyal patient here even though I moved to Tigard 2 years ago."
